Buy an ISI-marked cooker
Safety starts before you cook. Always choose a pressure cooker with the BIS/ISI mark — it's mandatory in India and certifies the cooker meets safety standards. A cheap, uncertified cooker is a real risk.
Never overfill
Fill the cooker no more than two-thirds full — and only half full for foods that froth or expand, like dal, rice, and lentils. Overfilling can block the vent and is a leading cause of accidents.
Check the vent and valve before every use
Make sure the steam vent isn't blocked and the safety valve moves freely. A clogged vent traps pressure dangerously. Clean them regularly so they always work.
Inspect the gasket
The rubber gasket (sealing ring) must be clean, soft, and crack-free. A worn or hard gasket lets steam escape and stops the cooker sealing properly. Replace it periodically.
Release pressure safely
Never force the lid open. Wait for the pressure to drop fully — either naturally or via the release valve — before opening. Opening a pressurised cooker is extremely dangerous. Keep hands and face away from escaping steam.
Don't leave it unattended (stovetop)
Stay nearby while a stovetop cooker builds pressure, and lower the heat once it whistles. For electric units, use the correct settings and keep the release valve clear.
Maintain it well
Replace gaskets, safety valves, and the whistle/weight when worn — genuine spares keep your cooker safe. A well-maintained cooker is a safe cooker.
