Pressure Cooker Tips for Faster, Tastier Everyday Cooking

Master the whistle count

Different foods need different cooking times, measured in whistles on a stovetop cooker. As a rough guide: rice 2–3 whistles, dal 3–4, rajma/chana 6–8, and most vegetables 1–2. Lower the flame after the first whistle to cook evenly and save gas.

Use the right amount of water

Pressure cooking needs enough liquid to create steam — too little risks burning and blocking the vent, too much makes food soggy. Follow recipe guidance, and remember pressure cooking loses less water than open cooking.

Don't overfill

Keep it two-thirds full at most, and half-full for foods that foam (dal, rice). This is both a safety rule and the key to even cooking.

Save time by soaking

Soaking beans, chana, and rajma beforehand cuts cooking time and helps them cook evenly. It also makes them easier to digest.

Cook a whole meal at once

Use stackable separators (or the trivet in an Instant Pot) to cook rice, dal, and vegetables together in one go — a brilliant time and fuel saver for busy days.

Let pressure release naturally for tender food

For meats and beans, letting the pressure drop naturally keeps them tender. For vegetables you want crisp, a quick release stops overcooking.

Get to know your Instant Pot presets

If you have an electric multi-cooker, learn its presets and the sauté function — you can brown onions and spices, then pressure cook, all in one pot.
